Men In Black 3 Fails to Live Up to Its Predecessors – Review

15 years after introducing the alien-busting Men In Black team to the world in 1997,  the director Barry Sonnenfeld finally made up his mind to bring out a third sequel to his highly successful Men In Black film series. Yes, It’s been a long time. But I’m one of those movie geeks that loves sci-fi movies. And MIB was one of my favorites of all time.  I still enjoy watching the first MIB movie to this day, even after watching it for like 17 times. The brilliant combination of visual effects and the awesomely detailed story just made it the coolest movie of the century. Although, I just wish I could say the same about MIB 3.

Story

Men In Black 3 brings 106 minutes of fun and excitement, filled with time travelling aliens, weird vehicles along with Agent J’s (Will Smith) desperate attempt to save his partner, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) from a terrible accident by going back through time. Agent J teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) in 1969 to once again save the universe from getting blown-up by an alien invasion.

This time the two awesome protectors of the earth, meets their greatest threat, Boris the one handed alien who escapes from prison and travel back in time to take his revenge on Agent K, who arrested him in the first place. Agent J ends up alone this time, and it’s his time to save the world. He also goes back in time, stumbling into a lot of trouble, he almost ends up Neuralyzed by a giant old-school Neuralyzer. Finally after explaining everything, the young Agent K offers his support to fight the alien to save the world and also himself .

Good Stuff

Only thing that kept me stick to the movie was the Josh Brolin’s  amazing portrayal of the young Agent K. There were also a lot of funny scenes of Will Smith and time-travel jokes which I’ve ended up laughing. Just seeing only a couple of alien-packed excitement was disappointing. But they were shown off brilliantly and visual-FX was not so bad either. Especially the awesome monocycle chase, which managed to fulfill my expectations of seeing a weird sci-fi vehicle in the movie.

Bad Stuff

MIB 3 was not so good as I thought it would be. A decade after watching the MIB 2, I’ve expected so much more from the latest sequel, like more ass-kicking aliens, head-blowing gun fights, awesome unearthly weapons and Neuralyzer scenes. But instead of going into detail, MIB 3 goes along a simple and old-fashioned time-travel story with the same old boring idea of saving the world. Even though the movie was fun to watch, in the end I was somehow disappointed.

Overall, MIB 3 fails to be as good as the last two titles.  But it fits in perfectly to the sci-fi comedy genre with its’ humorous scenes, time-travelling and few weird-looking aliens. And I’ts definitely worth a watch, not just to have few laughs and fun. But also to keep track and prepare for another sequel, maybe?

Men In Black 3 is already out on Blu-ray and DVD.
