Is the iPhone 5 the Last Red-Hot iPhone?
Apple has not been able to cope with the huge demand for the latest edition of the iPhone, as a result of which a number of customers will need to wait for weeks before they can receive their pre-ordered iPhone 5. However, the increase in the ubiquity of the iPhone could possibly lessen its cachet among discriminating gadget purchasers. Rob Enderle, tech analyst, is of the opinion that the iPhone might possibly begin to lose its elite status.

The weekend was pretty good for Apple, the sales of the iPhone 5 crossing the 5 million mark. There was an increase of approximately a million units, compared to the first weekend of the sale of the iPhone 4S a year ago. But the weekend was not equally good for all of Apple’s consumers, i.e. on Monday quite a few remained empty handed since Sprint, Verizon and AT&T were reportedly sold out.
The consumers are expected to receive their iPhone 5 either from Apple or from the carriers within three or four weeks. But the question raised by the weekend sales is a perennial one, often an issue with the Apple product releases, when demand is not typically met by adequate supply. Was this an intentional occurrence, one targeted towards keeping the demand and buzz high? Did Apple miss out on potential sales since they were unable to deliver sufficient stock?
According to Rob Enderle, a principal tech analyst from the Enderle Group, there were some indications suggesting that Apple was short on time, and hence could not get enough models built by the time of the launch. He is of the opinion that the problems were probably not anticipated, and suggest a lack of supply. Moreover, he added that new Apple product supplies are difficult to estimate, since they run into problems and quality control concerns quite often. Plus the phone itself is pretty difficult to build.
With every exciting new gadget that gets out, the pressure to meet demands is as high as the need to ensure the supply is not overabundant in a way that retailers have to wait for sales. In this case however, many of Apple’s faithful customers could have been upset. In the past however, Apple has been able to successfully cope with logistical challenges. Sales have increased significantly every year. So the issue that remains is whether the strong start will continue, or witness a fall?
